Biochemistry Bloods

Urea and creatinine are a sign of kidney function. Increased results indicate retention therefore kidney failure. Patients would need to be considered to CVVH (filtration).

Bilirubin, ALT and ALP are indicators of liver function. Increased results indicate liver failure.

C-relative protein (CRP) is an indicator of infection. Increased results indicate infection. These numbers are often dramatically higher, especially on ICU.

Prothrombin (PT) indicate clotting factor. Increased PT and PTT (prothrombin time) indicate reduced clotting capabilities as it takes longer to form a clot.

Troponin I is an indicator of heart malfunction. Increased levels indicate traumas such as MI. PICCO = cardiac study.

International Normalised Ratio (INR) is another indicator for clotting and also indicates reduced clotting with increased results.

White Cell Count (WCC) and neutrophils are another indicator of infection, as increased levels area released to combat the intrusion. However if the CRP indicates very high levels of infection, WCC and neutrophils may appear at normal.

Creatine Kinase is an indicator of muscle and cardiac detriment. Increased results may indicate damage 4-6 hours post-MI with the peak at 18-24 hours. It may also be raised post-RTA, fall, surgery or vigorous exercise.
