Plantar Fasciatis

Inflammation caused by excessive stretching of plantar fascia. Plantar fascia is essential for gait, and damage to it results in reduced extension during toe off. The worst symptoms are found at the calcaneal end.

Causes
  • Over pronation (flat feet)
  • Increased activity (e.g. a marathon)
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy (change in prolactin levels)
  • Poor footwear

Symptoms
  • Stiffness and pain in morning
  • Pain ascending stairs, stood on toes or standing for long periods
  • Pain lessens with exercise
  • Occasional numbness on outside of sole of foot
  • Associate tightness of Achilles and gastrocnemius

Treatment
  • Orthotics
  • New shoes
  • Weight loss
  • Stretches (gastroc)
  • Massage
